Obituary of William L Young

William Lyle Young (BiIl) was born on a farm near Gravity, lowa in 1930 to Mark Ray and Carrie Jane (Richardson) Young. He graduated from Gravity High School in 1948. Bill farmed with his father until he was drafted into the army in 1951. He served in Barberg, Germany and Wildflicken, Germany until 1953. Bill returned to the farm. He attended Clarinda Junior College graduating in 1958. He went to work as an insurance underwriter for Employers Mutual Casualty Company in Des Moines, lowa. In 1959 Bill married Harriet James in Clarinda, Iowa. They moved to Des Moines where their three children, David, Brenda, and Annette, were born. In 1972 Bill was transferred to the Employers Mutual Companies branch office in Brookfield, Wisconsin. Bill worked for the company for thirty-eight years, achieving the designation of Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter and also the designation of Chartered Life Underwriter, retiring as Branch Manager in 1996. Bill was very active in Salem United Methodist Church in Waukesha and served in many roles. Bill drove for Meals on Wheels for nineteen years, was a blood donor for many years, and was also a volunteer driver for Interfaith Caregiving for thirteen years. Bill participated in International Volunteer in Mission trips through the United Methodist Church going to Dominica, Grenada, Costa Rica, Trinidad, Kenya, Brazil, Chile, Bolivia, Honduras, Armenia, doing primarily building and repairing churches and schools. Bill enjoyed woodworking. photography, gardening, reading and played on the church dartball team. He also spent many hours enjoying his grandchildren and attending all their many sports and school activities. He and Harriet participated in many bicycle trips and hiking trips, both in the United States and Europe. He enjoyed participating in an Honor Flight with his son David in 2016. Bill passed away March 23, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen Burright and husband Wayne, sister Frances Young, brother-in-law Bob Dodd and sister-in-law Rebecca Anderson and husband Bob. He is survived by his wife Harriet, son David (Kathy) Young of Sussex, Wisconsin, daughter Brenda (Doug) Lindsay of Waukesha, and daughter Annette (Mike) Koenig of Sun Prairie, Wisconsin; grandchildren Tracy (Greg) Scime, Matthew (Emily) Young, Joshua Lindsay. Jacob (Olivia) Lindsay, Tyler (Brittany) Koenig, Bethany Koenig, great grandson Sawyer Lindsay; also sister Carolyn Dodd of West Des Moines, lowa, brother-in-law Bill (Claudia) James of Alhambra, California, sister-in-law Janet (Jerry) Bryan of Ankeny, Iowa, nieces, nephews and friends. A memorial service will be held at Salem United Methodist Church, 541 State Highway 59, Waukesha 53186 on Friday, April 5. Visitation will be 9:00-11:00 at the church followed by the service at 11:00 AM. A private burial service will be at Prairie Home Cemetery, Waukesha. The family extends thanks to Legacy Hospice as well as the caregivers at New Perspective in Waukesha.
